41796 SACCHARUM OFFICINARUM VIOLACEUM PELE'S SMOKE GRA TGH $ 25.00 "Purple Sugar Cane" from Polynesia makes a dramatic pot plant with long elegant purple leaves ranked on the woody segmented maroon canes--long a premire favorite for collectors with a greenhouse desiring the visual design effect of this stunning "Black Magic Repellent Plant." This is also known as Saccharum 'Pele's Smoke' in Hawaii where it is a stunning permanent bedding statement. More recently this most handsome clump of dusky purple has won over temperated zone gardners bent on bringing a tropical tone to summer plantins. And indeed, the "Purple leaved Sugar Cane" becomes amazing when brought out into a collection of potted plants on your deck or patio. Various customers plant their ever-thickening clumps directly in their summer display beds, digging these shallow rooted clustered canes in the fall to store in their plant rooms or a corner of the hobbygreenhouse until spring re-planting. A bit of honesty: this can be very slow and quite difficult unless given the special conditions it demands.

50067 SCIAPHYLLUM AMOENUM ACAN TGH HP $ 6.00 "Velvet Cloak Plant" Beautiful velvety rippled leaves, purple beneath, perched on elegant (eventually tall) woody stems; purple flowers on the wand-like terminal spikes. Very showy although quite leggy if left on its own; so prune for the shape you desire or allow this exotic Acanthus to achieve the proportions of the standard (staking would be helpful) for which it is genetically programed. Nonetheless, for the consistent pruners among you, this can easily be kept in perfect proportions for the Wardian case where it adds a major velveteen class act.

Very compact, much branched stems eventually creating tiny cushions--excellent for extremely small terariums. Very distinctive beautiful "Spikemoss Cypress" species achieving more dramatic height than most of the tropical "Clubmosses." Certainly not "creepy." Unmatched for giving an exceptionally elegant vertical effect in a wardian case or larger terrarium; but remember that this is very tropical and thus, unlike various Selaginella species offered here, is not tolerant of chill.

Victorian favorite. Some customers claim to bloom this in outdoor summer containers; but blooms most reliably for us in midwinter when such brazenly colored daisies are desperately needed.

Not a strong grower during the summer--we prefer to ship this during the cooler part of the fall as the leaves tend to become mush if shipped during warm periods.

41471 SENECIO MIKANIOIDES [DELAIREA ODORATA] COMP HP CGH $ 3.25 "German Ivy" or "Parlor Ivy" Glossy angled bright green leaves on succulent stems. South African species remaining quite popular as it tolerates a range of conditions. As likely to tumble from a windowbox in today's designs (especially as grows at least three times as fast as true Hedera ivies), as from the ornate urns in Nineteenth Century gardens--but always among the most popular of houseplants. Some plants are never out of fashion (even though their latin names morph into tonguetwisters).

60888 SENECIO PLEISTOCEPHALUS COMP CGH HP $5.50 Scandent African shrublet, the "Golden Garland Vine" with broad semi-succulent oval leaves, attractively serrated; tiny bright yellow flowers in astoundingly large masses mid winter in the greenhouse. Fanciers of succulents are drawn to this for its gradually expanding woody base (caudex): by the way, many succulent leaved, and fat stemmed, and caudiform species of Senecio are offered in the SUCCULENTS section of this website. This attractive "Charlatan Ivy" produces showy heads of sulphur-yellow daisy flowers typically around Christmas followed by tiny dandelion seed heads; effectively displayed in a hanging baskets year round.

40917 SERISSA FOETIDA FLORAPLENA RUB HP CGH $5.75 Miniature-statured woody shrub with interlacing twigs bear tiny glossy green leaves in pert pairs and cute double white flowers tucked along the stems. The "Double flowered Snow Rose" much valued as the bonsai "Kochok" because with time it gradually takes on the character of aged trees. Quite a treat when in bloom.

42136 SERISSA FOETIDA PINK FAIRY RUB HP TGH $ 5.25 Hansoti #18. Marvelous compact selection with distinctly fastigate habit and reduced lvs; lovely pink blossoms. Very vigorous selection good in a sunny window. Also successful trained as a staked standard, achieving an appearance similar to that of a staked Myrtus.

Very long lived as keeps pilling up new tubers above old ones, making this irresistable to caudex collectors.

20359 SINNINGIA SELLOVII GES HP CGH $ 4.75 From soft basal foliage mature stems (eventually as tall as three feet) bear many pendant swollen dark salmon pink fls attractive to every passing hummingbird; seed collector Tim Ross recommends full light to encourage spring to fall bloom for this Brazillian native. Various plant friends store the (eventually) considerably sized tuber during the winter with other tropical bulbs, then plant out directly into their garden beds (sunny spots are best, with rich well drained soil--anywhere glads and dahlias thrive) for an astounding summer display--few visitors to their gardens can even begin to guess what the succulent leaved Gesneriad with an attentant vigilant hummingbird might possibly be (they'll never guess Gesneriad, alone Sinningia)! Since I characteristically neglect to dig most tropical bulbs & tubers, I keep my oldest tubers (some now 15 years old) in giant 15" baskets where they are essentially evergreen.
