COLEUS VARIETIES for the 2010 SEASON

The handful of plantsmen still pretending to disdain COLEUS simply have not caught up with the Victorian gardeners! For those still uncomfortable with the "C" word, simply announce that you collect Solenostemon scutellarioides cultivars--keeping in touch with current nomenclature. Millenium fashion embraces brilliant color & delicate detail from shocking tattoos to detailed needlework. The Coleus & their Plectranthus kin allow many choices between these two extreme poles from the punk brash to the shyly subtle--a point substantiated by a ramble though our Coleus Photo Gallery on the Internet at http://www.rareplants.com/gallery2.html. Or refer back to your old copy of Fine Gardening for color photos. We can send you a selection of types for standards, for golden (or red or purple) hues, for baskets, for brilliant borders in sun or shade, for windowboxes or imposing urns.

For the following two collections, tell us if bedding, basket, standards, or topiary fills your Victorian urge to order a passel of these glitzy guys.

99108 COLEUS CRAZE COLLECTION I: Tell us if bedding, basket, standards, or topiary fills your Victorian urge to order a passel of these glitzy guys. 5 plants @ merely PRICE: $12.00

99483 COLEUS CRAZE COLLECTION II: We also can concentrate of ochre/yellow tones, reddish beacons to pinkish tones, or demonic purples when gathering your 10 plants @ PRICE: $20.00--If you order more than one #99108 or #99483 you will most likely receive a few duplicates of the same cultivar, as the selection on these changes each week.

Over the years we have received much valuable feedback from plant friends as to which cultivars do well in New England with chill nights even during summer, in Oregon costal areas with high levels of humidity, in the Gulf Coast area with downright oppressive summer spells, and so on: we can gather a collection for your area with considerable confidence as to best performing cultivars, if you so desire. If you want particular hybrids by name, do not order a collection but instead order plants individually by stock numbers from the following list. Once again we are preparing this list with freezing weather outside in January, and thus cannot accurately predict which cultivars will be most successfully propagated for spring shipping. Please allow us to substitute with similar hybrids--often a better selection has been trialed and is waiting in the wings. If you do stipulate "No Substitutes" we will hold your order until these specific plants are ready--if you call to rush such a stipulated order, we will automatically substitute since a small private business cannot hire enough office staff to run back & forth from office to pulling areas to shipping houses for such requests. If you do need a very specifically named Coleus in some quantity, you must allow us the lead time to make sure you are shipped the correct one as we are NOT a liner farm, but a specialty nursery known world wide for our wide range of rare plants not available in the general trade. Nearly all Coleus are extremely cold/chill sensitive (especially if planted in cool soil); thus, we will ship them as weather conditions dictate so that you will not receive a package of mush. Please remember that we have absolutely no control over our weather conditions, and no control over your weather conditions either.

The following descriptions reflect observation of plants grown in bright light locations--shady locales & spring greenhouse conditions result in more green & smoky tones; some like 'Hanover Surprise' seem to change their colors every month no matter how situated! Please be aware that the camera cannot perfectly cope with the true spectrums of Coleuroid reds (which often look mauvish in the shots) and purples (which veer into bluish lilacs sometimes). We are pleased to announce that we have ever more and yet even more Coleus in the works, which will be appearing in this list shortly. Few, if any, of the cultivars we offer fail as "Sun Coleus" in the more temperate zoned areas of the United States and Canada--please check with your local publications if you are uncertain of a particular cultivar's performance in full exposure in South Florida or Texas because a number of evaluations have been published for you by universities and by public gardens. None of the following are seed produced strains. All are vegetatively propagated to keep the particular clone pure. We are very aware that plant tags and labels tend to morph at public gardens' plantings and that some nurseries rename or (for an unknown given to them) creatively assign a new name to a cultivar/hybrid already quite well known by its original name--please do not be upset if we send you the correctly named one--especially as we are often the originating hybridizers of the newly renamed! (Yes, the widely available Proven Winners' 'Amoura' is merely a recent mireading of the label of Frielings' well known hybrid, 'Aurora'--and Ken's name still makes a great more sense in describing the colors of that hybrid Coleus.) We are delighted that so many of you have found us through initially purchasing a "Stained Glass Coleus" at your local garden center: these are indeed the patented hybrids of our ongoing breeding programs.

19030 COLEUS: RAINBOW FOLIAGE FOR CONTAINERS AND GARDENS. New and wonderful book. There is no way that the Glasshouse Works could not offer this book! Coleus are our love!! By Ray Rogers. Photographs by Richard Hartlage. Coleus are no longer your grandmother's parlor plants. Favorites during the Victorian era, these plants have made a dramatic comeback with a dazzling variety of leaf color, shape, and pattern. No other plant is so easy to grow and propagate. Their sumptuous colors and tough constitution make coleus ideal both as attention-getting focal points and as complements to other foliage or flowering plants. In this lavishly illustrated volume, expert plantsman Ray Rogers offers equal parts of design inspiration and practical advice. The book contains 404 full-color photographs and presents 225 cultivars in the encyclopedia section, which is organized along the lines of plant habit and leaf shape/color. Three major chapters present the ins and outs of culture, propagation, and problems we might encounter along the way. Other chapters cover history, designing with coleus, coleus in containers and in the garden in general, and sporting and reversion. $ 29.95 plus $ 4.50 shipping.

An excerpt from this book: "While the skeptics and unbelievers would answer this question with, "What? There's such a thing as a good coleus?", any coleophile worth his or her salt appreciates which characteristics set a given coleus above another. Perhaps the most important quality of a good coleus is its "set and forget" nature (thanks to Vern Ogren of Color Farm for this catchy term): plant it and enjoy it without needing to make a constant fuss over it. Of course any plant deserves to receive sound horticultural treatment from its caretaker, with at least some thought given to its selection, function, and placement in the garden; adequate site preparation; appropriate amounts of water and fertilizer; and protection from the elements, insects, diseases, and the like."

Advisory for Spring 2010 Coleus Shipping.

We no longer can accept rush orders especially going to the Far South and the Florida area for Spring delivery unless you understand that our Greenhouses are in the North and we have to wait until crops mature. We do not have the same climate as Florida! We try to get Coleus shipped starting around the first of May each year. If you want your Coleus shipped by early May, then we recommend 1) giving us a couple subsititues, 2) allowing us on large coleus orders to backorder if we need to, or 3) ordering one of our fabulous Coleus Collections! If you order our Collections, this gives us the ability to ship your order earlier with a lot of our best and sturdiest Coleus, our choice. We are far enough north that we cannot get some Coleus into the rooting stage until late April or early May. We try to ship from our greenhouses all year, but weather does play a big part in our crops. Some plants are shipped at the best time for that item. If by chance you receive your order in early June (almost always because you have stipulated "no substitutes" for very tempermental hybrids), you will be surprised by how much these plants will grow in just a few short weeks. But most customers order strong growing hybrids suitable for bedding and containers--and these are available early and late for shipping. Don't forgert you can always correspond by phone or email with us concerning order status. Our email address and our Toll Free Numbers are given on the Order Confirmation letter as well as on our site.

55657 COLEUS CANINUS LAB TGH HP PRICE: $ 4.00 Odoriferous succulent leaves, slightly viscous, on tumbling thick stems; attractive curosity--but when leaves are crushed, beware the "Eau de Firehydrant" fragrance. We received this some years ago from Sydney Botanic Gardens via California's Quail Botanical Garden and are amused that this rather modest plant is now being aggressively marketed as the "Piss Off" or "Scardy Cat" plant reputed to keep cats (and even dogs) at bay. This does not work well here in our observations, but then, none of our cats seems particularly daunted by the canine tribe. Could be that the staff cats consider themselves to be feline rather than canine?

58423 COLEUS (PLECTRANTHUS) CANINUS FUZZY WUZZY LAB TGH HP PRICE: $ 7.50 Available soon. This is a variegated form of the the famous repellant. Odoriferous succulent leaves, slightly viscous, on tumbling thick stems; attractive curosity--but when leaves are crushed, beware the "Eau de Firehydrant" fragrance. "Piss Off" or "Scardy Cat" plant reputed to keep cats (and even dogs) at bay. This does not work well here in our observations, but then, none of our cats seems particularly daunted by the canine tribe. Could be that the staff cats consider themselves to be feline rather than canine? This will be available in August.

69013 COLEUS FORSKOHLII LAB TFH HP PRICE: $ 5.50 Quite pungently fragrant small succulent leaves ranked on stiff upright (and sometimes tumbling) stems; thick woody bases--the camphor like aroma is used to deodorize the skin by rubbing the juicy leaves. Probably a Plectranthus.

56747 COLEUS HYBRIDUS ALLIGATOR LAB TGH HP PRICE: $ 4.75 Congested Lohman critter not to be "seeya later"--rumpled wide liver toned chocolate leaves with guilded scaled violet and John Deere green brushings. Bizarre fasciation of stems may look like pulled licorice; like kelp or something evolving (devolving?) under the sea. For those who see Coleus collecting as an adventure.

49437 COLEUS HYBRIDUS AMAZING GRAPE LAB TGH PRICE: $ 5.50 Rich purples and red accented by a wildly flounced flamenco margin touched with lime gilt--habit resembles 'Red Ruffles' and 'Peter's Wonder' but with more dominant maroon margins with lime freckled edges--irregular habit renders this looker better as a specimen than as a bedder. From the Bakers Acres,.

55628 COLEUS HYBRIDUS AMAZON LAB PRICE: $ 5.50 Solid golden ochre leaves elaborately ruffled around quilted medallion centers-- looks like an absolutely mad basil plant bred on Mars. Upright sturdy habit; one of the very few ochre yellow color types holding up well in winter windows. Certainly more chill tolerant than most of the gold/ochre leaved hybrids.

54627 COLEUS HYBRIDUS ANTIQUE LAB HP TGH PRICE: $ 3.75 Tighly bunched wide leaves of a coppery-green patina with dusky brick rose speckling strewn randomly over the surface. A Frieling hybrid of 'Ella Cinders' x 'Crazy Quilt' selected for color & compact habit; perhaps darker than 'Cranberry Salad' but not as bright of contrasty as the garish 'Freckles.'

50564 COLEUS HYBRIDUS APOCALYPSE LAB TGH HP PRICE: $ 4.00 Yet more drama from Frieling: A big dark tower of wide thick substanced deep chocolate velour leaves (closely packed like a stack of shingles) widely flared with violet veins and with dramatic ginseng green cut margin. So far blooms abort (this is a good thing for garden designers); seems to tolerate fall chill far better than most. This has become a basic due to its resistence to wind.

55624 COLEUS HYBRIDUS ATLAS LAB CGH PRICE: $ 4.00 Very large cupped leaves with flame patternd purple border. Pinks & violets with verdent green centers--but less contrast than the similar 'Dipt 'n Wine'; heavy substance makes this a natural for standards.

49463 COLEUS HYBRIDUS BIG CHIEF LAB TGH PRICE: $ 4.25 Heap big showy. In the Spring, wide yellow leaves with lacy purple veined central medallion slashed through the center with deep maroon, the flounced petticoat margins richly crennate. Summer color is darker. Note the photos. Similar to 'Tiger Lily' but keeps winter foliage better and far less likely to bloom mid-summer..

55690 COLEUS HYBRIDUS BIG RED LAB CGH PRICE: $ 4.00 Erect plants cloaked in dusky red rose leaves, betraying no orange or purple (altho veins are violet) tones when in full sun, each scallop edged a solid John Deere green. This hybrid richly deserves its continued popularity--one of those reordered every season by the coleoholics

23758 COLEUS HYBRIDUS BIPOLAR BIGOLLY LAB TGH PRICE: $ 5.25 A more highly toned 'Schizophrenia' with dustings of ocher and red at the center of the leaf fading to pale violets, rose read, and wheat white at the tips--all with random deep maroon dustings. Needs full sun to achieve effect.

51772 COLEUS HYBRIDUS BLACK CHERRY RIBBON LAB TGH PRICE: $ 5.75 Very current appeal with petite foliaged self branching selection perfect in many usese. Tight buns of diamond shaped wildly lobed mini leaves of blush pink shading to rose, banded chocolate and champagne. Ever so darling.

57505 COLEUS HYBRIDUS BLACK LACE LAB TGH PRICE: $ 4.00 Very frilled 'Cantigny Royale' sport forming petite tumbling mounds of frothy purple foliage developing a faint cabbage green edge in lower light; this excellent Charles Downer find seems to have developed an awkward alias of 'Duckfoot Midnight' in Florida trade. Renaming plagues the Coleus offerings nationwide. We are confident that this excellent hybrid prefers to achieve the effect of lace far more than becoming a quacker--in fact this is by far the strongest hyperlacy hybrid for exposed sites such as containers in windy areas..

55660 COLEUS HYBRIDUS BLACK MAGIC LAB CGH PRICE: $ 4.00 Modestly statured upright habit with mahogany purple dragon leaves beautifuly outlined in avacado margined scallops, repeated with lime encircled central raised medalion. Very reliable; always popular sturdy grower (even though not very black!) whether used in bedding, urns, or a windowsill pot.One of the reliable ones with an on-going fan club.

32504 COLEUS HYBRIDUS BLACK NIGHT LAB TGH PRICE: $ 3.75 Widely fingered pine green leaves (somewhat fragile in substance) with purplish maroon designs surrounding the central raised medallion veined violet. A hopeful, not descriptive, name.

49464 COLEUS HYBRIDUS BLING BLING LAB TGH PRICE: $ 4.50 Vigorous progeny of 'David' with slashes of maroon, parchment pale lilac and even cantalope & apricot tones on an elaborately lobed leaf held on long elegant petiole to give a lacy fluttery effect. This Frieling hybrid successfully brings other nearby colors together and the excellent billowing habit makes it a natural in combination pots or even a hanging basket.

66763 COLEUS HYBRIDUS BLUSHER LAB TGH PRICE: $ 5.50 Very wide shimmery rose/maroon/scarlet leaves of rich texture; olive tipped crennated edges. Very wide damask red leaves dappled violet & crimson; congested habit, strong substance and a wide habit: absolutely gorgeous and remarkably tolerant of early fall chill.

49465 COLEUS HYBRIDUS BOMBSHELL LAB TGH PRICE: $ 5.50 A Frieling hybrid with 'Kong Mosaic' paternity--but unlike papa, this very wide leaved stunner displays very regular color bands and maintains year 'round foliage--but most importantly, does not form summer bloomspikes to mar a planting.. (NOT Baker's 'Blond Bombshell'). From the number of re-orders last season, we assume this is becoming a must-have favorite--certainly the biggest boldest golden form we offer.

51773 COLEUS HYBRIDUS BRONZE GOD LAB TGH PRICE: $ 6.50 Wide thick coppery mahogany leaves with bright green edge; strong colorful progeny of 'Mr. Wonderful.' ; typically develops a remarkable sheen as fall approaches.

49466 COLEUS HYBRIDUS BURLESQUE LAB TGH PRICE: $ 4.00 Strongly statured Frieling hybrid with rich color presence: each deep blackish maroon leaf flaunts a central pale toned medallion and a slim lime toned crenate margin.

57506 COLEUS HYBRIDUS BURGUNDY GIANT LAB PRICE: $ 5.25 Rich dusky reddish burgundy leaves with maroon veins and a deep toned raspberry mask in full sun; very upright fastigate habit insures this strong grower a place in the heart for all those who train standards. Seems identical to 'Burgundy Towers' and Florida's 'Wine Towers.' (Ah, the permutations of plant tag inspiration!)

55612 COLEUS HYBRIDUS BUTTERFLY LAB TGH PRICE: $ 4.75 Lacinate leaves with purples and olives (like a pastel 'Snowflake' with three tiers) on strong central stems making this heirloom hybrid a natural for small standards. Never flashy, always charming, especially when combined with bolder leaved hybrids.

49467 COLEUS HYBRIDUS BUZZ LAB TGH PRICE: $ 4.00 The richly stained woody stems allow this to become "The Standard Buzz" as is easily trained to some height. The elegantly elongated leaves, toned violet pink and dellicate basil, are accented with a central pale electric flame. Left on its own, it will self branch to create a lacy mound of a truely lovely muted Martha Stewart color pallett. A Frieling hybrid perfect for those simply exhausted by the flashy.

49435 COLEUS HYBRIDUS CALYPSO LAB TGH PRICE: $ 4.75 Easily grown, fast branching ferny critter with deeply fingered leaves of gold touched with lemon lime: gives a planting a bright golden ferny flouncy look--lovely. This Frieling hybrid may appear to be ever so delicate, but grows vigorously--and has quickly become on of our best resellers..

66726 COLEUS HYBRIDUS CAMILLIA LAB CGH PRICE: $ 4.50 A watercolor subtle melting of roses, mauves, pinks, avacado & champagne tones intermingle; a subtle sophisticated heirloom hybrid maintaining a remarkable popularity. Excellent selfbranching wide mounding habit.

55695 COLEUS HYBRIDUS CANTIGNY ROYALE LAB CGH PRICE: $ 4.00 Very tiny elaborately lobed mahogany maroon leaves tightly packed on muchbranched short toppling stems. Intensifies the similarly statured 'Purple Duckfoot,' 'Charlie McCarthy,' & 'India Frills' when planted as a group. From Cantigny Gardens in Wheaton, Il. The touchstone by which any new mini must be evaluated. Constantly reinvents itself, turning dusky green in shade, but turning a true licorice in full sun.

66762 COLEUS HYBRIDUS CARDINAL LAB TGH HP PRICE: $ 4.50 Dusky rose red leaves with wide lime crenations Heirloom type. Like the cardinals at the birdfeeder, this is deservedly popular because it is colorful and quite unabashed.

66916 COLEUS HYBRIDUS CARELESS LOVE LAB TGH HP PRICE: $ 5.00 Very bold brassy Downer selection with dramatic splashes of maroon, cocoa, & blood red on citron chartreuse leaves. Dramatic selection most often used as a "spot" plant--because a whole bed of this can create dizzyness and palpitations of the eyelids.

49468 COLEUS HYBRIDUS CATHY'S SUNSET LAB TGH PRICE: $ 6.00 Certainly the brightest and most highly skirted to date: the very bright lemon yellow leaves, each with a clever lime heart, are extremely flounced and skirted (enclosing the stem completely) with very ruffled crennations--far more fingered than 'Killer Gold' with a brighter yellow margin.. Soooooo Cooool.

55966 COLEUS HYBRIDUS CHARLIE MCCARTHY LAB CGH HP PRICE: $ 3.00 Totally darling; ultimate coleus cute. A Downer selection with even smaller leaves than the parent 'Duckfoot' with tiny mint green leaves (with tinsy purple tattoo if grown in full sun) massed on tumbling stems. Most compact form we've seen which needs no special pampering or veiled threats to flourish. Receives very high marks from growers in the deep south. (And litegardeners wax most enthusiatic about its performance under the tubes.)

49445 COLEUS HYBRIDUS CHEAP FRILLS LAB TGH PRICE: $ 6.00 Very light chocolate and lavender leaves with pink centers and wide scalloped, ruffled crenations. The Quite petite, tidy habit appropriate to the furled foliage--easily elbowed out.

58336 COLEUS HYBRIDUS CHIRP LAB TGH PRICE: $ 6.00 Yellow saturated lime tones on dramatically frilled leaves with pale midribs and elaborately fingered margins, with basil and violet designs. Recent Frieling hybrid from the loins of 'Calypso.'

51729 COLEUS HYBRIDUS CHOCOLATE BEAR PAW [BIG FOOT] LAB TGH HP PRICE: $ 4.00 Very showy frilled deeply fingered medallion leaves with deep yummy rosey purple tones accented with pink veins and bright creamy edged ruffles and flounces. This rates very low on the Macho scales--one look at these flounces will tell you it cannot remember even one football score!

42333 COLEUS HYBRIDUS CHRISTMAS CANDY LAB TGH PRICE: $ 4.00 leaves randomly splashed with rose red, magenta, cream and deep green. The brightest leaf, making this our best seller on sight--and after offering this for many years, we still ship out more of this magnificent creature than any other Coleus hybrid.

55957 COLEUS HYBRIDUS COLLIN'S GOLD LAB TGH HP PRICE: $ 3.75 Pert small lime leaves with bright pastel lemon margins neatly scalloped; excellent bedding selection; very sun tolerant upright straw toned heavily branched reliable creature with excellent color in the winter conservatory. True: various others are gold while this is straw-lemon; but we did NOT name this. Very strong constitution for exposed difficult areas. Reliably holds winter foliage indoors unlike most in this color range.

55629 COLEUS HYBRIDUS CONCORD [RUBY FLUSH] LAB CGH PRICE: $ 4.50 Velvety deep red and blush rose leaves with fine green toned marginal crenations; gives a reliable raspberry color in full sun. Considered an heirloom variety.

66806 COLEUS HYBRIDUS COPACETIC YELLOWLAB HP TGH PRICE: $ 4.00 Mid-sized wide, very pastel straw yellow leaves strewn with gold to basil flecks. Bakers Acres creation which will have staying power in the market. Sometimes stock is limited because we experience trouble wintering this hybrid.

41091 COLEUS HYBRIDUS CRAZY QUILT [HYB] LAB CGH HP PRICE: $ 4.00 Maroon-red surface patched dark wine and ochre--splendid if trained as a low standard; excellent in tropical bedding. One of the original Coleus offerings in the old Country Hill Greenhouse catalogue (for which we grew): and still an excellent choice for continers, even keeping up a good appearance in the winter greenhouse.

49470 COLEUS HYBRIDUS CREAMY DREAMY LAB TGH PRICE: $ 4.75 Wide habit with much branching to create an amazing pale confection of soft apricot leaves with dark pink and violet dustings (in ful sun), ochers in shade. We trialed this Frieling.hybrid repeatedly as would seem too delicate for bedding--but it passes the full sun and stiff wind tests everytime. One of those always reordered by designers.

49469 COLEUS HYBRIDUS CRIMINAL BARBIE LAB TGH PRICE: $ 5.75 So very weird Gothik in appearence: a very naughty Coleus with narrow puckered leaves of jade green with maroon licorice and coppery lime highlights along the slim scaber leaves with tortured cut edges. Excellent for the miniature garden as remains petite while radiating serious attitude. We cannot tell whether this recent Frieling hybrid is popular for its name or for its quite distinct appearance.

55507 COLEUS HYBRIDUS DADA DADDY LAB TGH PRICE: $ 4.00 Bright yellow heavily substanced leaves, white flamed, with a liberal sprinkling of lemon and flecks of carmine & violet. Frieling hybrid forms rounded bush of subtlely brash colors. Tolerates cool temps better than other yellow types and thus has survived the tests of time.

49447 COLEUS HYBRIDUS DAFFY LAB TGH PRICE: $ 5.50 Richly fingered rosy purple foliage over rich olive green. Thickly foliaged upright habit. "Stained Glassworks" series. Dark rose & red 'Snowflake' shaped 3-D leaves; ocean waves breaking with olive tips. Definitely more colorful than 'Butterfly,' yet tends to be more annual and thus not as good a choice for training as a standard.

51766COLEUS HYBRIDUS DAPPLED DAWN LAB TGH PRICE: $ 4.00 Handsome low habit: tidy self-heading type. Small pale ochre to wasabi green sabre leaves with quite bright white central flames strikingly accented by the row of white gold dots along every margin. While sharing parallel colors, this Frieling hybrid is smaller statured and more wide in habit than the somewhat vertical 'Hue Dude.' Definitely a winner as a modest sized self branching pot plant, hanging basket subject, or component of an elegant urn or windowbox as is reluctant to bloom, but easy to grow--even in the winter greenhouse. Excellent also in a small hanging basket or windowbox as stems "relax" under the weight of the foliage.

55961 COLEUS HYBRIDUS DAREDEVIL LAB TGH HP PRICE: $ 4.75 Excellent habit for standards w/ multitudes of furled spear leaves with flared carmine & violet medallions impressed on bubbly yellow ochre; very flashy creature from Dale Huddleson, developing true red bands in full sun. Much more fastigate and more deeply toned than 'Redcoat'

66721 COLEUS HYBRIDUS DARK FRILLS [INDIA] LAB CGH HP PRICE: $ 3.50 A sport of 'India Frills' selected by Charles Downer with a very dark dramatic center fingering.

55633 COLEUS HYBRIDUS DARK STAR LAB GH PRICE: $ 4.50 The darkest of all the so-called black coleus we sell. Blackish purple wide leaves closely spaced on self branching ebony-violet stems. For the "Black Garden"; very flat foliage with only slight ruffling. Deservedly popular despite its somewhat squat slow growing nature. Not as tall nor as vigorous as the ruffly 'Othello.'

51727 COLEUS HYBRIDUS DAVID LAB TGH PRICE: $ 4.75 Very dramatically fastigate much darker toned sport of 'Stormy Weather' with elongated vivid olive leaves richly splashed chocolate bronze. One of the best for standards and back of the border exclamation points.

23749 COLEUS HYBRIDUS DERVISH LAB TGH PRICE: $ 4.75 Persimmon green leaves with violet veins flecked with cranberry and ripe wheat gold; very large dramatic foliage with erect blackish purple square stems bleeding onto the deep purple underleaves. Dramatic small statured pappa of 'Dark Secret'.

60999 COLEUS HYBRIDUS DIANE'S GOLD LAB TGH PRICE: $ 4.50 An all golden ochre echo of 'Flirtin' Skirts' with pertly pinked, wildly furled rounded leaves enclosing the stout erect stems; darker veins appear in lower light. Named for Diane Gosser, this elegant beauty seems to evoke a golden full dress ball from Victorian times as each furled leaf gives as much flounce per ounce of any plant outside of the most outrageous furled Acalyphas with their pinking sheered margins--no photo can do it justice. (Very pale tones, so grow as a shady garden subject in the most intense areas of the South.)

55514 COLEUS HYBRIDUS DIPT IN WINE LAB CGH PRICE: $ 3.00 Very wide billowy leaves of intense ochre with lower third colored rich crimson as if "dipped"; shared by Doug Ruhren, this candidate for standards has become a basic already in bold bedding schemes. Similar to 'Atlas' and hopelessly confused with it in the trade.

51743 COLEUS HYBRIDUS DOCTOR WU LAB TGH PRICE: $ 5.50 Upright habit: many small ochre flamed buttery yellow leaves, each nicely flounced, all with an apricot blush heightened by the rhubarb purple stems. The name suggests a Chris Baker brainstorm

50569 COLEUS HYBRIDUS DRAMA QUEEN LAB TGH PRICE: $ 4.50 Brilliant carmine leaves slashed with blood burgundy & plum and dashingly accented with a bold rim of acid ochre; a sport of 'Careless Love' selected and reselected by Ken Frieling. Certainly one of the best and most reliable container successes with richly saturated color emphasized by the elegant framing borders. Often a bit more popular than our stock plants can take so we have increased the cutting stock to support your demand for a dramatic wide branching low habit.

66718 COLEUS HYBRIDUS ECLIPSE LAB CGH PRICE: $ 4.00 Fabulous wide crennate leaves of brilliant violet blushed a pinkish rose--green only appears if grown in low light; very wide nearly lateral habit. This is the one which always comes out bluish in photos--thus the one we send to those who demand the one pictured in magazines with a blue sapphire cast! Quite wonderful in real life as well as in its printed life.

54487 COLEUS HYBRIDUS ELLA CINDERS LAB TGH PRICE: $ 4.25 Dark olive designs never repeating on the dusky purpled trim foliage--different light intensities and different levels of fertilizing bring out several tone ranges. Resultingly, no really accurate photo seems possible for this conservatory creature.

53186COLEUS HYBRIDUS EMBLEM LAB TGH PRICE: $ 5.75 Distinctively wide avacado green leaves with honeydew white bands tracing the radiating veins, with random splashes of carmine and inky purple. Very impressive current Frieling hybrid.

66727 COLEUS HYBRIDUS EMILY LAB CGH PRICE: $ 4.75 Erect stems disappear under lacy petticoats of foliage: each fringed/frilled lemony ginger leaf centered with a pastel gold blotch. Still the touchstone by which all extremely ruffled hybrids must be measured.

66988 COLEUS HYBRIDUS ETNA LAB TGH HP PRICE: $ 4.00 Ruffled rose blushed red leaves give velour "hints" framed by lima green & eggplant toned tips, typically curling into a wee ringlett; & a disturbingly magenta midvein flame; erect woody stalks makes this an amazing (potentiall five foot) standard. We originally offered this seldom branching horizontally challenged critter for its hybridizer as 'David Metzger's #12.'

55699 COLEUS HYBRIDUS FACK LAB CGH PRICE: $ 3.75 Stout, close-foliaged shrub with the colorations of a 40s sofa cover: chocolate purple with dark cabbage rose centers and bug-green scallops. AND: yes, we have no better idea what the name means than you do. A very basic and deservedly popular bedding choice as is strongly self branching to form a wide carpet of rich victorian colors.

53155 COLEUS HYBRIDUS FANCY FREE LAB TGH PRICE: $ 5.25 Fabulous new Frieling hybrid with deeply crennate ruffled saturated creamy yellow leaves with pale maroon highlights & deep burgundy rims--set off by strong eggplant purple stems. Good wide habit; excellent vigor. Extremely popular.

53381 COLEUS HYBRIDUS FISHNET STOCKINGS LAB TGH PRICE: $ 6.25 Ample golden lime leaves with a striking mosaic of purple to mahognay veins. Will NOT be shipped until very warm conditions as drops both leaves and roots with any chill. Needs warm root zone temps. Our customers report this to be a disaster as a house plant. But it is so very very beautiful1

54043 COLEUS HYBRIDUS FLIRTIN' SKIRTS LAB HP TGH PRICE: $ 4.50 Stout short stems engulfed by hemispherical furled scalloped & pinked leaves in rich designs--in full sun these rounded clasping leaves turn near-gold. Very unique distinctive prize from the Downers which never fails to suggest that Edward Scissorshands has been at this with his pinking sheers.

55689 COLEUS HYBRIDUS FLORIDA SUNRISE LAB HP TGH PRICE: $ 5.75 Cheerful giant crenulated leaves of ripe apple green with stunning mosaic of rusty maroon; best in outdoor sun. Darker color than 'Florida Sunshine' with cranberry flecks and violet veins in full sun; very wide leaves. Every year we consider removing this Southern favorite because New Englanders persist in ordering it and then failing with it because they only have a few nights per summer warm enough to satisfy its hunger for heat. Oregon, Washington, and Northern California have no nights warm enough! While attractive, this must be considered the ultimate Mason-Dixon line Coleus. Similar effect can be had in the north with 'Dipt'n Wine' and 'Japanese Giant' which tolerate more chill.

55964 COLEUS HYBRIDUS FRIGHT NIGHT LAB TGH HP PRICE: $ 3.75 Strong branching stems with explosions of very long narrow croton-like leaves of yellow fringed in olive adding slashes of pink in full sun. The excellent lateral growth makes this a prime hanging basket type with major crazy lacy impact. Want to drive an illustrator insane--an assignment to draw this might do the trick.
